To the Organising Team
Dearest Organsing Team members,
I realise I have been very slack with you guys since we started planning this event in 2007.
I know that being fierce with you isn't good, and that things won't get done.
I'd like to ask each and every one of you.
Are you aware of how many more days we have until 3NGLES?
No.
It is, in fact, in 30 days.
But, if you take away 2 more days of CNY, and 5 days off as the seniors go off to OBS and the Sec2s to Adventure camp, do you know how many days do we have left?
TWENTY THREE.
Yeah, sure, most of you will feel that it's in one month, so what?
No big deal.
How many of you out there can come up to me and tell me, "Hey, I know everything that's going on, I even know that there's a combined meeting for the three teachers and the student leaders on Monday. I know the problems we are facing right now, and I know exactly how Joyce and Priscilla feel - how stressed they exactly are, and I really want to help make 3NGLES fun and enjoyable."
I bet, none of you do, apart from Nandini, of course.
Are you guys even AWARE of the amount of effort WE - Joyce, Nandini and I have put in? We did the Training, Programmes, Logistics, Finance & Admin proposals, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. We met up with Miss Sie, argued out cases out, redid proposals we felt that could be so much better - and we did our homework, studied for the same tests (and maybe more) as all the Secondary Threes, Nandini even had Prefects Investiture, but still, still, we found time to do all this.
Why? Because we want 3NGLES to be a success. We want each and everyone of you, as well as the participants, to enjoy themselves, while learning from the process. We want to make everyone proud.
Are you aware of the time we sleep, even during the holidays?
It's usually in the wee hours of the morning - 12, 1, and even, like now, 2 AM.
3NGLES Organising Team members, I'd like you to spare a moment to just think - think about what you've been doing for 3NGLES. Most of you have just been complaining, complaining, complaining. About tit and tat. Of course, we complain as well, but we still do it. What choice do we have? We're the leaders, it's up to us to make sure that this is a success.
Do you even care about 3NGLES.
I highly doubt it.
Oh, as long as you get the CCA points, and CIP hours, you'll stay on.
But if you don't?
You're just gonna quit, aren't you?
You think you've experienced stress?
Try being in my shoes, for once.
Trying to persuade Miss Sie to see from my point of view for 1.5 hours, trying not to show how upset I was, and trying to edit the programmes proposal at the same time - all the while knowing that there's unfinished homework, there's 3 tests coming up, that my piano exam is nearing, that it's CHINESE NEW YEAR, that it's 11pm and that I'm super duper tired from visiting relatives.
Don't say you're stressed until you're in my shoes.
3NGLES OT,
I'd like to highlight some issues and problems I'm facing with you guys.
Recently I've encountered, with some of you, that you're very eager to push the blame on others.
Let me give you an example.
I ask you for a proposal on Saturday, and tell you that it's due on Monday.
On Sunday, you call me up and ask me if you could give it to me on Tuesday night, because you were out the entire day Sunday, and going to be out the entire day on Monday as well.
I tell you that it's not possible, that I have a meeting with Mrs So-and-So on Tuesday afternoon, and ask for the proposal to be in my email inbox by 8.30pm.
8.30pm Monday comes around and, guess what? I do not have a proposal.
When I ask you for it, you tell me that you've been trying to call me since 4pm, and why didn't I answer my phone?
You blame me for not being home.
You blame me for not picking up my handphone, when it's not by my side 24/7.
You blame me for the proposal not being in my inbox.
You blame the other members of your committee for not being available.
You blame the OTHER members of the OT for not being free enough to help you.
You blame everyone - for what? For the non-existant stress that you've been feeling since 4pm?
I clearly told you on Saturday - and you only start doing the proposal on Monday?
And the other members of the OT have been telling you to do the proposal, because it's important.
You blame, let's just say, Prefects Investiture for eating up your time, and because of it, you were not at the last meeting when they discussed and changed the last proposal.
There's always a reason why I ask you to do a new proposal. Because the old one has been rejected.
Isn't it obvious that you have to start from scratch?
And yet, and yet, you still blame the others.
Is it our fault that you only started TRYING to do the proposal at 4pm on Monday, when you had the entire Saturday and Sunday to do it?
Is it our fault that we're not available at the click of your fingers?
Is it our fault that we have our own lives to lead?
And still, you tell me,"You don't have to be so mean to me when you're stressed, you know."
I'm not being MEAN to you. I'm being strict. Because you've been doing this again and again. Time after time. Everyone is aware of that, and still I let it pass.
But not this time.
Another thing I want to highlight is the fact that you guys are not actively participating in the planning of this event.
Do you really want to do this?
If you don't, and are only part of this because of the CCA points and CIP hours you think you're going to get, I suggest you leave right now.
Each and every one of you are so eager to leave at every single meeting we have.
And, I can sense that you do not have much respect for those senior of you, and the Advisors.
May I remind you that we're older than most of you, and respect is expected from you. Sure, we speak to you, we joke with you, and we're friendly with you, but we are still your seniors. I expect all of you to treat the Advisors nicely and with respect. They are guests in our school.
During every meeting that we have, WORK IS NOT DONE.
I want to address this problem because the leaders are doing all the work.
We ourselves are stressed enough with the Secondary 3 life as it is.
We have committee members to help us, to be able to do things for us when we're just too busy.
How many of you can safely tell me that you've done something to relive your AOS's stress?
I think I can count it on one hand.
The problem is, you guys are always distracted.
With the camera, with the computer, with whatever!
You guys are just not FOCUSED.
Do you know that if you actually focused and finished the things delegated to you earlier, you'd actually be able to go home earlier?
But no, you HAVE to play, you HAVE to camwhore, you HAVE to gossip - and you still want me to let you off early?
No way.
Lastly - I'd like to emphasize the meaning of DEADLINES.
What is a deadline?
It is a time limit, as for payment of a debt or completion of an assignment.
I set deadlines for a reason.
And that is so that I can recieve the work that you have done on time.
But yet I'm recieving late work.
You know who you are, it's already 2.45am and I still do not have your proposal in my inbox.
You are sleeping, but I am awake.
3NGLES OT, I have been very patient with you guys.
But this is the final straw.
We're so close to the event now - and still you guys are taking it sitting down, not giving a damn about it at all.
I'm very disappointed in you guys, I thought by handpicking my OT it'd actually be better than last year's.
But I'm afraid to say that you guys are so much worse that 3NGLES 2007 Organising Team, and that I think Joyce, Nandini and I can do this thing alone so much better than doing this with you guys.
Reflect on what I have just said, people.
We need a change in attitude around here.
And it starts from each and every one of you.
I really hope to see a change in attitude on Monday.
Again, what I want to see:
1. More responsibility for your own actions
2. More focus at each meeting
3. All proposals and work delegated to be done ON TIME.
4. More initiative to help and to know what is happening.
5. More passion for 3NGLES
Think. Just think.
Priscilla.
Programmes committee - Miss Sie wants to see you on Monday right after school at the staffroom.
